It has seemed good to me, by way of Preface, to recall to the mynds of those among you who know, and to make knowne to those Good Readers who were before ignorant thereof, how that I have not presumed, without thorough investigation, to wryte any of the Deeds of so Greyt of Those in whose Company I did fynd myself throughout my Lifetime, nor without the most accurate examination of Credible Wytnesses to cause what I had written to be validated.
Moreover, when I learnt from those who knew the Beginning, the Middle and the End of these Glorious Stories, Lives and Conversations, I sometimes inserted the Names of these, my Sources, to establish the Truth of my Narrative, and thus ventured to put my pen to paper and to wryte. But when my Work was arranged, but still kept back from publication, I frequently submitted it for perusal and for correction to those whose councyll I value and keep, and to others who, for a long time had well known the Lives and Conversations of these People who are the subjects of these Wrytings..
Some faults were, at Their suggestion, carefully amended and, thus, with every error hopefully expunged, I have taken care to commit to wryting what I clearly ascertained to be The Truth, and to bring it into Your presence also, my brothers and sisters in the Society, in order that by the Judgment of your Authority, what I have wrytten might be either corrected, if false, or certified to be true, and then shared with the Populace of the Knowne Worlde. For it is in the act of NOT wryting that Knowledge is lost forever to the crushing weight of Tyme...
In these Wrytings, I have attempted to follow in the august footsteps of the Venerable St. Bede, whose work on The Life of St. Cuthbert was inspirational in this venture.
