The Thyra and Frodi Viking Project
Workshop Research Projects Classes Library Shopping Resources
Friends of ours wanted to update their wardrobe from their newcomer kit. They both liked Danish Viking around 10th C.. So, I designed 2 complete sets of clothes for each that approximate that era in the colors that they liked. Photos of the garments are in our photo gallery.
Like most historical costume, both Thyra and Frodi's kits contain multiple layers. The garments will be addressed in the order of the skin out.  For greater flexibility, the garments can mix and match with each other. While the outfits are not perfectly authentic, the goal was to create a more authentic look than their previous kit and be flattering. Natural fibers were used extensively, and the outfits are hand finished and embellished.
Thyra:
Layer 1: The Smock
The smock is the first layer. Both smocks are made of white handkerchief weight 100% linen. The smock is a simple A-line design, with a scoop neckline and fitted sleeves. The neckline, wrists and hem are hand sewn. These were completed in late 2006.
Layer 2: The Underdress
Yellow Linen Underdress (Completed August 2007)
The first underdress made was of yellow medium-weight 100% linen. The pattern was constructed using Rectangular construction techniques, so it had side gores to gradually add fullness through the hips and flare to the skirt. The dress is close to floor length and has a keyhole neckline.

The neckline, sleeves and hem are hand-finished. The wrists and neckline are embellished in a threaded herringbone embroidery stitch in black and green cotton embroidery floss.

Layer 3: The Overdress
Green Linen Apron Dress
Research regarding the Apron Dress is sketchy at best. A complete extant garment of this type has not been found, so even the most learned must hypothesize from faded art, literature and textile fragments. That said....

The Apron Dress is made of green 100% medium-weight linen. This intrepretation consists of three long rectangular panels and with three triangular gores. Thus, the fit is snug at the top and begins to flare at the waist. The straps are rather wide to balance the look. The Apron Dress top is embellished with card-woven trim in green, yellow and white, and the seams are embellished with a double herringbone stitch in yellow cotton.

Frodi:
Layer 1: The Shirt
The shirt is the first layer. Both shirts are made of white handkerchief weight 100% linen.
Layer 2: The Undertunic
Yellow Linen Undertunic
The first undertunic made was of yellow medium-weight 100% linen. The pattern was constructed using Rectangular construction techniques, so it had side gores to gradually add fullness through the hips and flare to the skirt. The tunic falls a few inches below the knee and has a keyhole neckline.

The neckline, sleeves and hem are hand-finished. The wrists and neckline are embellished in a square chain stitch in black cotton embroidery floss.
